The Set Out
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Canvas on Masonite Panel
Original Painting Image size 24" x 30" Framed size 30" x 36"
The term "set out" is railroad parlance for separating a car or cut of cars from a train and placing it on an adjoining track. Trains coming through Lawton,
Oklahoma, where I lived for a decade, would almost always stop and set out some cars. This painting depicts a typical moment when the locomotives have returned
onto the mainline after setting out the flatcars to the left, and are ready to move back to the rest of its train. That's Gerald, a Frisco car man, watching.
Lawton maintained a car repair facility staffed by two able men, and they had the reputation of being able to repair anything on the rails. This painting is
one of my favorites, not only because of of the story it tells, but also because the colors are directly stated and successfully capture what I remember about
that spot. This painting was exhibited at the 1980 Mid-Year Show at the Butler Institute of American Art.
