On first moving to Virginia, I expected to see Chesapeake & Ohio locomotives
on trains on the C&O line near my home. What I saw instead was a myriad of color
schemes of all the railroads that had recently become part of the Chessie System, and
later CSX. All the trains I saw were powered by a hodge podge of color schemes, signaling
the era of heightened acquisitions and mergers. But, that meant I didn't have to drive twelve
hours to see Clinchfield locomotives. They were now regulars on coal trains into the coal
piers of Newport News. There were also Atlantic Coast Line, Seaboard Coast Line,
Seaboard System, and the occasional Western Maryland paint scheme coupled to
Chessie System power. Here is an empty coal train headed west just past
Williamsburg, Virginia, pulled by units wearing Family Lines paint.
