Wig-Wag, Gong and Crossbuck
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 20" x 16"
Framed size 25" x 21"
In a Northern Pacific kind of mood that is long standing, I will frequently depart from what is still wet on the
easel and begin another Northern Pacific scene, this one focusing on a nearly gone type of crossng signal, one that
has a wig-wag sign with an accompanying gong on the mast. These wig-wags added an air of excitement when the gong
started sounding off and they began to swing back and forth, all designed to warn motorists of an oncoming
train. Approaching is a brace of Northern Pacific F7s leading a freight train in a scene that is typical of that
railroad's vast prairie territory.
